To set the Display Performance setting default, with no document open in InDesign, choose the option you want from the View menu. A Place PDF dialog will appear on your screen. In the Place dialog box, check Show Import Options, then select the Illustrator file you saved in Step 2, and click the Open button. Now, open an Illustrator file in InDesign.
